“For there is no friend like a sister
In calm or stormy weather;
To cheer one on the tedious way,
To fetch one if one goes astray,
To lift one if one totters down,
To strengthen whilst one stands”, Christina Rossetti
Photos taken in collaboration with Danielle and Nicole, two twins with a passion for vintage – in particular for the ’70s – and a very great sense of style indeed! Don’t miss to have a look at their online shop (https://www.depop.com/betty_berry), you’ll find incredible clothes and you’ll start thinking what to add to your wardrobe!
A special thanks goes also to the hair and make up artist Daisy Oldershaw and to Bianca Elgar (accessories and home designer) for allowing me to use her house for the photoshoot.
It is now three years since I met Neil, quite soon after moving to Oxford. It was one of my first models here in England, and he helped me so much with getting confidence in myself and in the work I am doing. I was then happy to photograph him again, after a long time, this spring. Here are some of the photos we took in his apartment, under the supervision of his playful snake Patrick (see the picture below!).
“A garden to walk in and immensity to dream in – what more could he ask? A few flowers at his feet and above him the stars.” Victor Hugo, Les Misérables From a visit to the Botanic gardens of Oxford with my Lomo Instant.
Dreams wear white dresses and live in old houses with no roof, but sky. There are trees next to the bed where they sleep; plants grow on the wall around which they chase the day that is ending. What they wait is to be free, to walk and run and be seen, being recognized as real.
I took these photos some weeks ago. Anna, the model, was leaving England and I thought it would have been great to have a photo-shoot at her home. The wind was blowing and the sun close to set. I found the garden smelling of a perfect nostalgic atmosphere. I simply followed the inspiration of the moment, thinking about my life and the houses I used to live in. I always had a garden, a wild field, or a park where to hide, read, think, and enjoy the sound of the hours. I am thinking about it now – as writing this post is waking my memories up – that it’s a long time I don’t hear cicadas singing all day long. My old room, in Sicily, must resound of their songs right now.
An improvised and last minute post! I still can’t believe it is snowing here in Sicily, just one mile away from the beach. I was so excited this morning when I saw the snow falling down to the ground from a transparent sky, that I could not stay in bed, and despite the cold and my unsuitable outfit, I went out to take a few pictures. What a magic end of the year!
When I decided to do this photo shoot, I did not imagine I would have loved classic ballerina poses so much to think about working on projects like this one again in the near future. My model, Kiran Williams, was lovely and really helpful, and I want to thank her for that. I also thank Caterina, a friend of mine, for the great location she helped me to find. And now, just enjoy the tutu dance!
